The main reason why rodents (particularly rats) are a major concern is because they can become a severe health hazard. Scientific research shows that rat feces can cause HPS (Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome) which is a very serious respiratory disease passed from rats to humans through urine, saliva, or droppings by breathing in the “aerosolized virus”. Some of the symptoms of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome include shortness of breath, dizziness, fever, muscle aches, and intestinal discomfort.
It is well known that rats reproduce “like rabbits”, and they not only have up to 6 liters per year, but they can also have as many as 14 babies per litter. This means that just one mom rat can produce an astronomical number of 84 babies per year!
Rats are also intelligent animals due to the fact that they communicate and migrate via “scent trails” that they build. Since these little critters cannot hold their bowels, they will eventually spread feces and urine throughout an attic and attract even more rats! Once a certain area has been fully infested and no longer has a food source, the rat colony will then migrate to a different property. Rats will create a scent trail (feces & urine) from one property to another, acting as a road map for the entire colony. So if you are within 30 yards of a property that has rats, then chances are that you may have visitors as well.
